The Vălișoara Gorges, also known as the Aiud Gorges or Poiana Gorges, are one of Romania's natural gems. Located in the eastern Trascău Mountains, these gorges invite you to explore spectacular scenery.

In this article

In 2000, the site became a protected area of national interest thanks to its remarkable botanical and geological features.

Location, access and distances

The Vălișoara (Aiud) Gorges are located in Livezile commune, 15 km from Aiud, Alba County, in the Trascău Mountains of the Apuseni group, in the southern part of the Rimetea Depression. The rock walls in the reserve range in altitude from a maximum of 779 m to a minimum of 425 m.

To reach the Aiud Gorges from the south, you can take the DJ107M road, upgraded between Aiud and Buru up to kilometer 14. From there, the road runs for 2 kilometers through the gorge section, with huge walls 100-150 m high and fascinating scenery.

If you're coming from the north, from Cluj or Câmpeni, you can reach the road to the gorges from the DN75, which runs through the Arieș Valley, heading toward Buru – Rimetea – Colțești – Vălișoara.

Another access route is communal road 103 (unpaved) from Râmeț Monastery / the Râmeț Gorges, along Valea Uzei – Valea Inzelului – Valea Făgetului, joining DJ107M at Poiana Aiudului – Vălișoara.

Distances to the Vălișoara Gorges:

  • from Cluj-Napoca: 1 hr 19 min (68.8 km) via DJ107M and DN1/E60

  • from Alba Iulia: 45 min (44.5 km) via DN1

  • from the Turda Gorges: 36 min (33.3 km) via DJ107M and DN75

  • from the Tureni Gorges: 47 min (43.2 km) via DJ107M and DJ103G

  • from Aiud: 19 min (15.3 km) via DJ107M

  • from Ciucaș Waterfall: 35 min (26.5 km) via DJ107M

  • from Rimetea: 11 min (9.6 km) via DJ107M

  • from Turda: 50 min (38.1 km) via DJ107M and DN75

  • from Câmpeni: 1 hr 27 min (84.7 km) via DN75

  • from Târgu Mureș: 1 hr 22 min (114.5 km) via the Transylvania Motorway/A3

  • from Sibiu: 1 hr 29 min (121.9 km) via A1/E68/E81

The mountains' rock massifs

Carved into limestone, the gorges impress with their sheer size. They are crossed by Aiud Creek or Vălișoara Creek, a tributary of the Mureș River.

On the right, the imposing Bogza Peak (814 m) rises within the nature reserve, while on the left stand Pleașa Cornilor (722 m) and Răchiș Peak (779 m).

In the gorge walls, on both slopes, you can see numerous caves and karst formations such as karren, vaults and arches. (see Wikipedia)

Attractions on both slopes include Puculea Cave and Sandului Cave, Bogza Mare Peak (814 m) and Bogza Mică (647 m), the rock known as “Cetatea” (“the Fortress”), the downy oak forest, protected at European level, and Data Peak (884 m). Along the trail you will also come across the caves at Colțul Diacului, Gura Cheii and Piatra Lungă.

From Data Peak (the highest viewpoint in the gorges, reached by a demanding trail secured with cables on the rocks), the views reveal fairy-tale scenery over Vălișoara and the depression of the Trascău Mountains, with the villages of Izvoarele and Colțești.

Hiking trails

In the Vălișoara Gorges, in the Aiud Valley, there are several trails to explore, giving visitors the chance to admire the area's natural beauty. Here are some of them:

1. The Vălișoara Gorges loop trail, which is divided into two sections.

1.1. The right-slope trail (on your left if you're coming from Aiud), marked with a red dot, is shorter (4.5 km) and easier, and can be hiked in about 2-3 hours. This is also where you'll find Templul Cavalerilor Castle (restaurant and accommodation), with the most accessible panoramic viewpoint over the gorges. Along this loop you'll reach Puculea Cave (a shelter in troubled times) and the Bogza Mare (with a metal cross) and Bogza Mică peaks.

1.2. The left-slope trail (on your right if you're coming from Aiud) is longer and more difficult, taking about 7-8 hours to complete in full. Along it you'll reach Colțul Sandului, Sandului Cave and Data Peak.

The trails to Puculea Cave (right side) and Sandului Cave (left side) lead visitors to two of the most remarkable caves in the Vălișoara Gorges area, offering the chance to explore their karst formations and admire their beauty.

The path to Bogza Mare and Bogza Mică peaks leads to the two high summits near the gorges, offering spectacular panoramas of the surrounding landscape and the chance to observe the wild flora and fauna.

The trail to Cetatea Rock (left slope) takes visitors to an imposing rock formation called “Cetatea”, which offers a panoramic view of the whole area and is a perfect spot for memorable photos. Historical sources say that Zedecheu's fortress stood here in the 13th century, though it has not yet been found on the ground.

2. Sălciua de Jos – Bedeleu Plateau – Vălișoara Gorges trail

3. Poiana Aiudului – La Găvane – Data Saddle – Vălișoara Gorges trail

Biodiversity

Through an initiative held in 2010 for the International Day for Biological Diversity, specialists identified 340 species in the field, divided into the following categories: 190 plant species, 40 invertebrate species, 5 amphibian species, 7 reptile species, 87 bird species and 11 mammal species.

Of these, 27 are classified as strictly protected species under the EU Birds and Habitats Directives, while another 30 are considered rarities.

Among the plants identified are many rare species, such as the white rock pink, burning bush, wormwood, gentian, irises, martagon lily and snake's head fritillary. The 10 orchid species identified, also considered rare, are worth mentioning as well.

The themed trail was named “Biodiversity – the hidden treasure of the Vălișoara Gorges.” Twenty information panels were installed along the trail (10 on each slope). For more details, see the database of the Biounivers Association.
