Located in the village of Porumbacu de Sus, Sibiu County, the Clay Castle – Valley of the Fairies is a one-of-a-kind building that used to attract many tourists from Romania and abroad every year.
Clay Castle – Valley of the Fairies

Set at the foot of the Făgăraș Mountains (see also our article on the Transfăgărășan), in a peaceful natural setting, it is easily accessible from Sibiu.
Built largely from natural materials such as clay, sand, straw, stone and wood, the Castle is an example of modern ecological architecture.
The Clay Castle – Future Hotel
Construction began in 2014, with the aim of becoming a guesthouse with a restaurant, attracting visitors eager for experiences different from those offered by conventional tourism.
A lesser-known aspect is the complex process of building the structure, which involved traditional construction techniques adapted to today's requirements. For example, the walls are made of cob, a mixture of clay, sand, straw and water, which provides both thermal insulation and harmonious integration into the landscape. Every detail of the building was designed with special care to minimize its environmental impact.
Clay Castle, Sibiu County

Although originally conceived as a private project, growing public interest led the owners to let visitors in even while work was still under way.
In the future, the Clay Castle will operate as a hotel, with 10 rooms, according to the local press. You can follow news about the project on Facebook.
