UPDATE October 17, 2026: The Transalpina is open, with reduced hours: 09:00 – 18:00

On October 17, 2026, the Rânca – Obârșia Lotrului section (km 34+800 – 59+800) of DN67C – Transalpina is open daily from 09:00 to 18:00, a schedule in effect since September 26; the road is closed at night. The speed limit is 30 km/h, and vehicles over 3.5 tons are not allowed.

On October 16, there was isolated snowfall between Rânca and Obârșia Lotrului (1–2 cm), and road crews spread anti-skid material. DRDP Craiova advises drivers without winter tires to avoid the section. The winter closure date has not yet been announced; in 2025, the mountain section closed on October 20.

UPDATE May 28, 2026: Starting Friday, May 29, 2026, traffic reopens on DN 67C – Transalpina

The announcement came after the section between Rânca and Curpăt was inspected and approved by a commission made up of representatives of CNAIR, DRDP Craiova, and DRDP Cluj.

Traffic will be allowed for vehicles with a maximum authorized total weight of up to 3.5 tons, as follows:

  • from May 29 to June 30, 2026, traffic will be allowed from 09:00 to 20:00;

  • from July 1 to August 31, 2026, traffic will be allowed from 07:00 to 21:00.

Road users must follow the road signs in place and the existing traffic restrictions on this mountain road section. Depending on the weather, traffic may be temporarily restricted or closed for the safety of road users.

DRDP Craiova thanks and congratulates its colleagues at SDN Târgu Jiu, especially the employees of the Rânca District, for their sustained effort and the professionalism they showed in carrying out the work needed to reopen traffic on the Transalpina.

Drivers are advised to drive carefully, adapt their speed to road conditions, and check the state of the roads before setting off.

UPDATE May 26, 2026: Work continues on the Transalpina. DRDP Craiova denies reports that the road will open on May 27.

After several days of work on DN67C – Transalpina, representatives of DRDP Craiova said on Tuesday, May 26, that the reports circulating online about traffic reopening starting May 27, 2026, were false and were not official communications.

On May 21, DRDP Craiova announced that SDN Târgu Jiu machinery and crews were working continuously on the section between Rânca and Obârșia Lotrului to remove snow, clear the roadway, and inspect road safety features such as signs and guardrails.

Later, on May 25, the institution said that snow clearing was 99% complete and new signs were being installed, but stressed that traffic remained closed on the mountain section of the Transalpina.

In its new statement published on May 26, DRDP Craiova makes it clear that, as of now, NO date has been officially announced for reopening traffic on DN67C. The institution's representatives point out that the only authorities entitled to officially communicate information about the road's opening are CNAIR, DRDP Craiova, and the Traffic Police.

DRDP Craiova representatives said that information shared by unofficial accounts, personal pages, or accounts with no role in managing the road is not official communication and may mislead road users.

Snow clearing and work to make the road safe are continuing, and traffic will reopen only after the specialist commission's assessment and only when conditions are safe for drivers.

UPDATE March 18, 2026

So far, the authorities have not given us a date for the opening of the Transalpina in 2026. Last year, in 2025, the Transalpina opened on June 6.

UPDATE October 20, 2025

Transalpina (DN67C) mountain section closed from October 20, 2025

CNAIR announced the full closure to road traffic of DN67C – Transalpina, on the section between Rânca (km 34+800) and Curpăt (km 79+200), starting Monday, October 20, 2025.

The preventive measure was introduced following assessments by the Special Inspection Commissions and is justified by the pronounced atmospheric instability typical of high altitudes. The hazards cited include heavy snowfall, fog and black ice, as well as the risk of landslides and flash floods.

The closure complies with the provisions of the “Regulation on Road Traffic on Mountain Roads” (AND 615-2020), and the restricted sections are properly signposted.

UPDATE October 16, 2025

CNAIR ordered the closure of road traffic on an additional section of the Transalpina (DN67C), between Obârșia Lotrului (km 59+800) and Curpăt (km 79+200).

The measure is required by unfavorable weather conditions, including blizzards, black ice, and an increased risk of avalanches and rockfalls, which endanger the safety of road users.

The National Company for Road Infrastructure Management stresses that this closure is carried out in accordance with the Regulation on Road Traffic on Mountain Roads, code AND 615-2020.

The Rânca – Obârșia Lotrului section also remains closed, as traffic on this segment has been restricted since October 2, 2025.

UPDATE October 7, 2025

Traffic on the Transalpina (DN67C) remains closed due to unfavorable weather conditions and a 20–40 cm layer of snow, according to DRDP Craiova. The measure applies to all types of vehicles on the section between Rânca and Obârșia Lotrului.

UPDATE October 2, 2025

Traffic closed on the Transalpina – DN 67C, between Rânca and Obârșia Lotrului
Due to snowfall and blizzards (orange code warning), the road section between Rânca and Obârșia Lotrului has been temporarily closed, according to DRDP Craiova. The measure was taken to protect drivers and keep them safe.

UPDATE October 1, 2025

Traffic on the Rânca – Obârșia Lotrului section of the Transalpina (DN67C) has reopened. Traffic now runs on the normal schedule, from 07:00 to 21:00, and drivers are advised to drive carefully.

UPDATE September 30, 2025:

Transalpina (DN 67C) temporarily closed until Wednesday

The Transalpina section between Rânca and Obârșia Lotrului (DN 67C) is closed to traffic until Wednesday at 09:00, DRDP Craiova announced.

The decision was made because of unfavorable weather conditions, which caused a layer of ice to form on the roadway, preventing snowplows from working safely. The measure is aimed at the safety of road users. Details about the reopening will be announced tomorrow morning.

UPDATE September 29, 2025:

Sleet and snow have been reported on the Transalpina (DN 67C) as temperatures dropped. DRDP Craiova crews are monitoring the situation and intervening to keep the road safe. Drivers must have their cars properly equipped. As a reminder, access to the Transalpina between Rânca and Obârșia Lotrului is allowed from 09:00 to 21:00, and further restrictions may be imposed depending on how the weather develops.

UPDATE June 6, 2025: The Transalpina reopened to traffic starting today, Friday, June 6, 2025!

From 09:00 in the morning, drivers were once again able to travel the section between Rânca and Curpăt of the spectacular mountain road DN67C.

It's important to note that certain traffic rules will apply:

  • Initial schedule (until July 1, 2025): Access will be allowed daily from 09:00 to 20:00.

  • Extended schedule (after July 1, 2025): Driving will be allowed from 07:00 to 21:00.

  • Additional restrictions: The speed limit on this section is 30 km/h, and vehicles must not exceed a maximum authorized weight of 3.5 tons.

The authorities urge all drivers who choose the Transalpina to be extra careful and respect the particular nature of this high-altitude road.

Update May 28, 2025: Crews from the Târgu-Jiu National Roads Section are continuing their sustained snow-clearing efforts on DN 67C – Transalpina, focusing on the mountain section between Rânca and Obârșia Lotrului. The machinery is working to clear the roadway of snow completely.

According to recent information from DRDP Craiova, the essential work to make this spectacular section safe is nearing completion.

A thorough technical inspection of the road is scheduled for the coming days. This assessment will determine the exact conditions under which traffic can safely resume on Romania's highest road.

Update May 19, 2025: Unfavorable weather, with fresh snowfall, continues to affect the high section of the Transalpina (DN67C).

As a result, plans to assess the section between Rânca and Obârșia Lotrului for the resumption of road traffic are currently on hold.

The work to make the road safe has also been temporarily suspended, pending an improvement in the weather so that it can resume safely.

The authorities stress that this stretch of road remains closed and discourage any attempt to drive through it until further notice.

Update May 9, 2025: As of now, the National Company for Road Infrastructure Management (CNAIR) has not announced an official date for reopening traffic on the Transalpina. The mountain road section between Rânca (Gorj County) and Obârșia Lotrului (Vâlcea County) remains closed to traffic for the time being.

Snow-clearing efforts on the Transalpina, Romania's highest road, brought a bit of optimism to mountain road lovers on April 18, when DRDP Craiova announced that the snowplows had made considerable progress, reaching the area of Cărbunele Peak. This spot is a well-known landmark, where a pop-up market popular with tourists operates in summer.

Last year, the Transalpina opened to traffic on June 1, and traffic was stopped for safety reasons on November 11, 2024, as cold-season weather set in.

The decision to reopen the Transalpina will be made only when all conditions are met to fully guarantee the safety of road users. Until then, drivers are advised to observe the restrictions in force and to get information about the road's condition from official sources.

Update November 6, 2024: The INFOTRAFIC Center of the General Inspectorate of the Romanian Police announced that, starting November 6, the hours during which traffic is allowed on DN 67C – Transalpina have been restricted due to recent weather conditions.

The measure aims to improve traffic safety and applies to the road section between kilometers 34+800 and 59+800, between Rânca (Gorj County) and Obârșia Lotrului (Vâlcea County).

As a result, road access is allowed only from 09:00 to 20:00.

To prevent road accidents, drivers are advised to drive carefully, keep a safe following distance, and pay attention when changing direction.

Update June 1, 2024: The Transalpina, Romania's most spectacular national road, has reopened to traffic. Drivers will be able to use the mountain section between Rânca and Curpăt, but only during the day, from 08:00 to 18:00. At all other times, access is prohibited. A speed limit and a weight limit have also been imposed.

Update May 30, 2024: The Transalpina reopens to traffic on June 1! The official announcement was made by CNAIR director general Cristian Pistol on his personal Facebook page.

Attention! Traffic on DN67C between Rânca and Curpăt will be limited to a maximum of 30 km/h and to the 08:00-18:00 time slot. Cars weighing more than 3.5 tons are not allowed.

As a reminder, the Transalpina is the highest-altitude road in Romania (Urdele Pass, 2,145 m) and one of the country's top tourist attractions.

Update May 28, 2024: Traffic on the Transalpina could open this weekend, according to DRDP Craiova representative Cristian Tudor. Clearing of the roadway has been completed, along with the other inspection work, and the approval of the expert commission is now awaited.

The main condition for reopening Romania's highest road is ensuring the safety of those who drive it.

Update May 8, 2024: The Transalpina remains closed to traffic, DRDP Craiova announced today. Pieces of rock have fallen onto the roadway, and the road will stay closed as long as there are risks to traffic safety.

Original article, May 4, 2024:

Although it was initially estimated that the Transalpina could open as early as May 1 (there was even an online petition to that effect), it seems the snow-clearing work is not yet finished.

Thanks to the unusually high temperatures at this time of year, local guesthouse owners and tourists hope the Transalpina will reopen much earlier this year, perhaps even during the Orthodox Easter holidays.

A decision will be made once the road has been inspected and approved by road safety experts.

In 2023, the Transalpina opened on June 16, but in other years the road officially opened to tourists as early as May (2018, 2020).

As a reminder, the Transalpina is the highest road in Romania (Urdele Pass, 2,145 m) and one of the country's top tourist attractions.

We recommend that anyone interested consult official sources and check the latest information on the road's opening. Understanding traffic conditions and any restrictions is essential for the safety and comfort of your trip.

The Tășuleasa Social Association, which initiated the project, recently announced that Via Transilvanica is expanding. The goal is to connect all of Romania's historical regions, over the next 20 years, to the existing 1,400-kilometer network. A first concrete step in this direction was the inauguration, on June 5, of the “Terra Borza Teutonica” segment, about 170 kilometers long, in Brașov County.

The Transfăgărășan and the Transalpina, Romania's busiest high-altitude roads, reopened to traffic for the 2025 season on the same day: today, Friday, June 6. The authorities have officially announced the details of the operating hours and the safety measures that apply. On the Transfăgărășan (DN7C), access was allowed starting at 07:00 on the entire mountain section […]
