The Parâng Mountains are one of Romania's hidden treasures. They are part of the Southern Carpathians, in the Parâng-Șureanu-Lotru mountain group, and are the largest in area of all of Romania's mountain massifs. The origin of the name “Parâng” is shrouded in mystery, but it is said to come from an old Dacian word meaning “rocky” or “high.” A fully deserved description.
Parângul Mare

The many glacial lakes of the Parâng Mountains make them resemble the Retezat Mountains: Zănoaga Lake, Gâlcescu Lake, Verde Lake, Mija Lake, Lung Lake, Mândra Lake.

From here, you can continue along another section of trail toward the Groapa Seacă Chalet. This trail is accessible in summer, but demanding because of the elevation gain. The steepest climb on the ridge trail is toward Cârja Peak, which requires good physical fitness.
The village of Crasna – Molidvișu Mountain – Parângul Mare Peak

Proper Preparation for a Ridge Trail
Before setting out on a ridge trail, consult local experts or mountain guides to get area-specific information and make sure you are properly prepared for this special mountain experience.
Experience and Knowledge: Preparation starts with building up experience in mountain hiking and climbing. It is important to have a solid understanding of climbing techniques and mountain safety.
Proper Gear: Make sure you have the right equipment, including sturdy hiking boots, a backpack, layered clothing, and up-to-date maps of the area.
Planning and Knowing the Route: Study the route in advance and get to know it as well as possible. Have maps, GPS coordinates, and guides on hand to find your way. Knowing the exit points from the ridge in case of emergency is crucial.
Checking the Weather: Check the forecast before you set off and be ready for rapid weather changes in the mountains. The right gear for unexpected weather conditions is essential.
Food and Hydration: Make sure you have enough water and food for the entire route. In the Parâng Mountains, water sources can be limited, so plan ahead.
Physical Fitness: A ridge trail can be physically demanding. The elevation difference can be large, especially when climbing above 2,000 meters. Good physical preparation and training before the trip can help you keep your energy up and prevent excessive fatigue.
First Aid Knowledge: Know basic first aid and keep a first aid kit at hand to deal with any accidents or minor injuries.
Communication and Emergency Plan: Carry a means of communication, such as a cell phone with a charged battery or a radio, and tell someone who is not on the trip about your route and its expected duration, so they can alert the authorities in an emergency.
Respecting Environmental Rules: Respect the environment and follow eco-friendly principles to protect nature and make sure the trail stays beautiful for future hikers.
The Right Mindset: Be ready to face challenges and adapt to unexpected conditions. Attention to detail, focus, and making the right decisions in real time are essential on a mountain ridge.
Weather
In all high mountain ranges, there is a significant risk of thunderstorms in summer, especially in the afternoon. The mountain ridge is exposed and offers no natural shelter, except for certain refuges (the Cârja Refuge). Weather conditions can be unstable, and the wind can get strong as you climb.
