The Origin of the Salt and the History of Mining

Salt, often called “white gold”, has been mined in Transylvania since ancient times. At Praid Salt Mine, salt mining has a long history, with a tradition going back hundreds of years. Another important salt mine in the area was Turda Salt Mine.

The mine at Praid was first documented at the end of the 12th century, but there is evidence of salt mining as far back as Roman times. Initially, salt was mined at the surface by digging pits about 15 m deep. These later turned into lakes.

From the medieval period until the end of the 17th century, salt mining in Praid began to take shape, becoming a vital economic activity for the people of the region. In 1762, the Iosif Mine, the first underground mine in Praid, was opened. Toward the end of the 18th century, under Austrian rule over the region, two more mines were opened, the Carol and Ferdinand mines, with mining reaching a depth of 60 meters.

In the second half of the 19th century, mining began at the Paralelă Mine (so named because it ran parallel to the Iosif Mine), which remains one of the largest underground chambers in the country to this day, and toward the end of the century at the Elisabeta Mine.

In the mid-20th century, the Gheorghe Doja Mine was opened, followed in 1980 by another mine, 40 meters deeper than the others. The Telegdy Sector, named after the salt mine's former director, Károly Telegdy, was opened in the 1990s. For more details, see www.wikipedia.ro

Thanks to its value and usefulness, salt was an extremely precious commodity and supported the development of local communities, being used not only to preserve food but also in the mining industry and in various medical practices.

Salt mining here has relied on constantly evolving technology, adapting to each period. Initially, extraction was done by hand, then it moved on to mechanized methods, and today the salt mine offers a combination of history and modernity, in a setting with many benefits for tourists. In the early 1980s, a treatment center was opened here.

Health Benefits and Spa Treatment

Salt mining began centuries ago, but the mine became a popular tourist attraction thanks to the health benefits of salt aerosols. Here, tourists can experience salt therapy.

Inhaling these salt particles may help improve certain respiratory conditions and may offer some therapeutic benefits:

Relief of respiratory problems: Salt aerosols are believed to be beneficial for people with respiratory conditions such as asthma, chronic bronchitis, or respiratory allergies. Inhaling these salt particles can help open the airways and make it easier to clear secretions.

Reducing inflammation: Salt has anti-inflammatory properties. Inhaling salt aerosols can help reduce inflammation in the airways, providing a soothing effect.

Disinfecting effect: Salt has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties. Inhaling salt aerosols can help eliminate or reduce germs in the airways.

Immune system support: Some research suggests that exposure to salt aerosols may stimulate the immune system and help strengthen immunity against respiratory infections.

The contraindications for visiting salt mines that use salt aerosols include people who have:

  1. Tuberculosis: Inhaling salt aerosols can worsen lung conditions, including tuberculosis.

  2. Acute respiratory diseases: People with acute respiratory infections should avoid exposure to salt aerosols, as this could worsen symptoms or hinder recovery.

  3. High blood pressure: Inhaling salt can affect blood pressure, and in cases of severe hypertension, this could cause additional problems.

  4. Ischemic heart disease: People with heart problems, such as ischemic heart disease, should avoid exposure to aerosolized salt, as it could cause complications.

  5. Graves' disease: This is a thyroid condition, and exposure to salt aerosols may affect thyroid function.

  6. Neurological conditions: If there is a risk of fainting or dizziness due to neurological conditions, exposure to the salty environment of salt mines may worsen these symptoms.

  7. Claustrophobia: People who suffer from claustrophobia may feel uncomfortable in the enclosed spaces of the salt mine, which could increase their anxiety or discomfort.

  8. Pregnancy in the final weeks: Advanced pregnancy may require extra precautions, and in some cases it is advisable to avoid certain types of treatment or exposure.

It is important to note that the exact benefits of inhaling salt aerosols can vary from person to person, and this type of therapy can be used alongside conventional medical treatments. It is advisable to consult a specialist before starting any new type of therapy, especially if you have respiratory conditions or other health problems.
