A Look into the Past

Trascău Fortress or Colțești Fortress (Ráckevei vár in Hungarian) is located near Rimetea commune in Alba County and is administratively part of this commune. The fortress dates from the 13th century and played an important role in defending the territory against invasions (1241 – the Mongol invasion).

Trascău Fortress is also known as the fortress of the Thorotzkay family, the nobles who built it and ruled these lands in the Middle Ages. The chosen site was rocky and surrounded by steep slopes, and on it the walls with the two keeps were raised.

Over time, the fortress was inhabited and used as a noble residence with an inner courtyard, but also as a refuge for the locals in troubled times and as a defensive stronghold. The castle underwent multiple renovations and extensions over the centuries, becoming an imposing structure. Nevertheless, over time, the fortress lost its strategic importance.

In 1703, the fortress was destroyed by Austrian imperial troops because the Thorotzkay family opposed the annexation of Transylvania to the Habsburg Empire. Another fortress was built 4 km away, on another hill, to defend the area. The legends surrounding the fortresses, including that of a tunnel said to link them to the Roman Catholic Cathedral in Rimetea, have fueled mystical tales about these places.

Today, the Colțești fortress is an important tourist attraction in the Arieș Valley. Visitors have the chance to explore its ruins, admire the medieval architecture and better understand the history and culture of the area. It is a fascinating place that offers a journey into the turbulent past of this mountain region over the centuries.
