Cavnic Resort is located in a mountain area of Maramureș County. Thanks to its position at the foot of the Gutâi Mountains, the town is popular with tourists for its ski slopes, mountain trails and opportunities for relaxation.

It is known for its winter sports facilities, and snow is never in short supply.

In this article:

Location and Access

Cavnic is located in northern Romania, in Maramureș County, between the towns of Baia Mare and Sighetu Marmației. It is about 30 km from Baia Mare and about 40 km from Sighetu Marmației.

The resort lies along the river of the same name, the Cavnic, at an altitude of about 550–1,120 meters, and offers an ideal climate for outdoor activities and spectacular scenery.

Access is via well-maintained paved roads that connect Cavnic to the main roads in the region.

County Road DJ 109F: An alternative route that connects Cavnic with other towns and villages in the county, including Budești and Ocna Șugatag. This road is preferred especially by those coming from the Maramureș Land.

From the city of Baia Mare to Cavnic: about 35-45 minutes, depending on traffic. To reach the Cavnic slopes from Baia Mare, follow national road DN18 to Baia Sprie. From there, the route continues on the county road linking Baia Sprie to Cavnic, passing through the villages of Șișești, Dănești and Șurdești.

From Cluj-Napoca to Cavnic: about 2 hours and 30 minutes, via E58/DN1C to Baia Mare, then DJ 184.

Cavnic can also be reached:

  • From Sighetu Marmației, on the route that passes through Ocna Șugatag.

  • From Bistrița, following the route through Săcel, Bârsana and Călinești.

In winter, winter tires are mandatory. Road DJ 184 climbs into mountainous terrain, and snow and ice can make driving difficult. The views are spectacular, especially on the last stretch before entering Cavnic.

County Road DJ 184: This is the main access road between Baia Mare and Cavnic. It passes through places such as Șișești and Băiuț and is paved and well maintained. On this route, the distance is about 30 km.

Regular bus services run between Baia Mare and Cavnic several times a day. The trip usually takes 50-60 minutes.

The nearest train station is in Baia Mare, an important railway hub in the region. From here, there are direct trains to Cluj-Napoca, Bucharest, Oradea, Timișoara and Iași.

The nearest airport is Maramureș International Airport (Baia Mare), located about 10 km from Baia Mare.

The road to Cavnic is well signposted, and GPS works well in the area.

Cavnic's two ski areas, the Icoana slopes and the Roata slopes, are about 200 meters apart. They lie upstream on the Cavnic River, at the edge of town in the direction of Sighetu Marmației.

History and Traditions

The town of Cavnic has been mentioned since medieval times, and its history is closely tied to mining. The name “Cavnic” comes from the Slavic term “kopaonik,” which means to dig.

Mining mineral resources such as gold and silver, as well as zinc and copper (non-ferrous metals), was the main occupation of the inhabitants in the past. Historical documents show that mining played an essential role in the town's economic and demographic development.

Cavnic was home to the largest complex ore mining operation in Europe. In addition to mining, the local community developed a number of related crafts, such as metalworking.

Cavnic was granted town status in 1968. Locals also call it Capnic.

Starting in the 1970s, the town went through a period of rapid development. In 2001 and 2003, two ski slopes were built, named Icoana and Roata, and the tourist infrastructure was expanded with motels, guesthouses and a hotel, to make the most of the area's tourism potential.

Local traditions reflect the influence of mining culture. Festivals and cultural events often include demonstrations of old crafts, parades and folk performances typical of the region.

Elements of Maramureș culture are well represented in the area, from traditional architecture, including wooden houses and carved gates, to customs and folk costumes. Today, the main economic activity is tourism.
