Saturn Resort

16 Oct 2026 7 min read

Saturn Resort is located at the southern tip of the Romanian Black Sea coast and is administratively part of the municipality of Mangalia.

Geographically, Saturn is the last link in the chain of resorts developed in the ’60s and ’70s whose names are inspired by astronomy (Neptun–Olimp, Jupiter, Venus).

Geographic Location

To the north, Saturn Resort borders directly on Venus Resort, with a strip of vegetation marking the transition between the two, and to the south it borders the city of Mangalia.

The center of Mangalia is just 1 kilometer from Saturn.

The distance to the city of Constanța is 42 kilometers.

Main access is via DN39 (which is also E87), the major road linking all the resorts on the southern coast with Constanța and the Vama Veche border crossing.

History and Development of Saturn Resort

Saturn Resort was officially inaugurated in the summer of 1972, as one of the last stages of a large state project, launched in the ’60s, to extend the Romanian seaside southward.

It was developed at the height of the communist regime and was guided by a precise economic vision, namely creating infrastructure for mass tourism.

Saturn's urban concept was a dual one from the very beginning. On the one hand, it was designed for summer tourism aimed mainly at workers from Romanian enterprises (through the system of “rest and treatment vouchers” allocated by trade unions), but also at tourists from the socialist bloc countries (East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Poland).

On the other hand, the resort was also conceived to operate as a year-round spa center.

It made use of local natural resources – the mesothermal sulfurous mineral springs known in the Mangalia area.

Saturn Beach – 2025 Seaside Season

Saturn Resort's beach, about 2 kilometers long in total, has undergone a major expansion and modernization project that was recently completed. As a result, the sandy beach has grown and is now more than 100 meters wide in some sections, especially toward Venus.

The beach keeps its defining features: the sand is fine with few shells, and the sea floor slopes gently with no sudden drop-offs, a factor that keeps the resort attractive to families with children.

Another distinctive feature is its layout, broken up by protective breakwaters set perpendicular to the shore, which create a series of artificial bays.

In the southern part of the resort, toward Mangalia, there are small, semi-enclosed bays created by protective breakwaters, which offer calmer waters.

Spa Treatment

Saturn has a distinctive profile on the Romanian coast as a spa and climatic resort that also operates in the off-season.

Its spa facilities are based on two natural healing factors. The first is mesothermal sulfurous mineral water (with temperatures above 20°C), drawn from local springs specific to the Mangalia area.

The second factor is therapeutic sapropelic mud, which is extracted from Lake Techirghiol and transported for use at the resort's treatment centers.

These resources are used in a wide range of medical procedures (baths, wraps, aerosols, physical therapy) at specialized centers built directly into some hotels (such as Hora, Balada, Sirena).

The treatments address a wide range of conditions, including degenerative and inflammatory rheumatic diseases, post-traumatic conditions of the musculoskeletal system, chronic gynecological conditions, certain skin diseases and disorders of the peripheral nervous system.

Attractions and Activities in Saturn and the Surrounding Area

For leisure, the resort's infrastructure includes facilities geared to family tourism. Near the Hora hotel there is a water park (“Paradisio Aqua Park”), with water slides, pools for adults and children, and relaxation areas.

In addition, the center of the resort has a smaller amusement park and the shopping area known as “Dunărea Holiday Village”.

The range of recreational activities is rounded out by tennis courts, mini golf and rental points for water sports equipment (pedal boats, jet skis) on the beach.

At the northern edge of Saturn Resort lies Comorova Forest, a natural protected area of national interest. The “Paradis Land” adventure park has been developed here, offering adventure courses.

Just 1-2 kilometers away, the city of Mangalia considerably broadens the cultural and historical options. Here you will find the Callatis Archaeology Museum, which preserves an important heritage of the ancient Greek city.

Another historical monument of national importance is the Esmahan Sultan Mosque.

Mangalia Tourist Port serves as a starting point for leisure cruises on the Black Sea and is home to numerous restaurants and terraces.

Outside Mangalia's urban area, about 3.5 km to the south, lies the Mangalia Stud Farm. In the same region, a site of global scientific interest is Movile Cave, a completely isolated underground ecosystem.

Nearby are reserves of scientific importance, such as the “Agigea Sea Dunes” and the Lake Techirghiol area.
