Muntele Mic Resort, located in the massif of the same name at the foot of the Țarcu Mountains in Caraș-Severin County, is one of the most attractive mountain destinations in Banat.

In this article:

At an altitude of about 1,525 meters, this corner of nature offers a rare combination of spectacular scenery, recreational activities, and an atmosphere steeped in history.

With relatively easy access from cities in western Romania such as Timișoara and Reșița, Muntele Mic draws visitors in both winter and summer.

Why Visit Muntele Mic Resort?

The resort is known for its well-groomed ski slopes and the lifts that serve the area.

In summer, Muntele Mic becomes a true paradise for mountain hiking.

The resort is also popular for activities such as mountain biking, camping, and exploring the local biodiversity.

Historical and Cultural Background

Muntele Mic Resort also has a special historical significance.

On its heights stands the Heroes' Cross, an impressive 25-meter-tall metal cross erected in memory of the heroes who fell in World War I. This symbol of human sacrifice can be seen from great distances and is one of the most iconic landmarks on Muntele Mic.

The massif has been used for tourism since the interwar period, and its popularity grew in the 1950s and 1960s, when the first mountain huts and cable lifts were built.

Banat, the region where the resort is located, is known for its cultural diversity, which is also reflected in the hospitality of the locals and the distinctive culinary traditions visitors can discover.

Getting There and Location

The Muntele Mic massif lies in the northwestern part of the Southern Carpathians and belongs to the Retezat-Godeanu group. It sits between the Țarcu, Godeanu, and Retezat Mountains, and its highest point is Muntele Mic Peak, at 1,802 meters.

Muntele Mic Resort lies in the massif of the same name, in Caraș-Severin County, at an altitude of 1,525 meters. It is accessible all year round.

Main Routes to the Resort

The road to the resort is the main access route and is well maintained for most of the way. If you're driving, you can reach the resort via the following main routes:

From Timișoara (about 150 km): take European route E70 to Caransebeș, then continue on DN68 toward Zervești and Borlova, the starting point for the resort.
From Reșița (about 85 km): take DN58 to Caransebeș, then DN68, following the route to Borlova.
From Bucharest (about 450 km): you can take the E81 to Sibiu, then the E68 toward Hațeg and DN68 to Borlova.

The distance from Caransebeș to Muntele Mic is 40 km, which you can cover in about 50 minutes.

From Borlova village, the final stretch to the resort (11 km) climbs a winding mountain road, the DJ 608 A. It is a mountain road that is plowed regularly, but in winter your vehicle may need proper equipment (snow chains and winter tires).

Some guesthouses and local travel agencies offer transfers from nearby cities such as Caransebeș or Timișoara.

For visitors arriving by train, the nearest station is in Caransebeș, about 25 km from Borlova. From there, you can continue by local bus or taxi.

The last stretch of road to the resort is paved, but in winter it calls for caution (carry snow chains in case of sudden weather changes). Constant efforts are made to keep the road open through regular snow plowing, and updates are posted regularly on social media. Once you've covered this stretch, at the entrance to the resort, on the left, there is a plateau at an altitude of 1,600 m with a paid parking lot for about 600 cars. It is located across from the Borlova ski lift.

The resort itself has a working tourist infrastructure, including accommodation, restaurants, sports equipment rental centers, and ski schools.
