Olimp is a summer destination on the Romanian Black Sea coast, located in Constanța County and part of the city of Mangalia.

Its main feature is the distinctive architecture of its hotel complexes, most of them built on a high promontory, a layout that offers panoramic views of the sea.

In this article:

Geographically and administratively, Olimp is part of the group of resorts on the southern coast and, due to its proximity, is often seen as a single tourist area together with Neptun resort.

History and Development

Opened in 1972, the resort was initially renowned for spa tourism, attracting many visitors, including foreigners, thanks to the famous treatment cures of Ana Aslan.

During the communist era, Olimp was an exclusive luxury destination reserved for the political elite and important guests of the regime. Today, its profile has changed, and it is a favorite resort for tourists looking for a quiet vacation.

Geographically, the resort stands out for its high cliff, which offers spectacular views of the Black Sea. The beach has two distinct areas: a narrower, crowded one in the south (toward Neptun) and a wider, wild, undeveloped northern stretch frequented by nudists. Wikipedia.ro

Location and Accessibility

Olimp resort is located on the Black Sea coast, in the south of the Romanian seaside. It borders Neptun resort to the south and the Cap Aurora – Jupiter tourist complex to the north. Administratively, the resort's territory belongs to the city of Mangalia.

Road access is via DN39, which is also a European route (E87). It connects the city of Constanța with Mangalia and the Vama Veche border crossing.

The nearest major railway station is Mangalia Station. During the summer season, CFR Călători runs direct trains, known as the “Sun Trains,” connecting Romania's main cities with the coast.

From Mangalia Station, the transfer to Olimp, about 7-8 kilometers away, can be made by local minibus, bus, or taxi.

The resort is served by regular minibus and bus services running between Constanța and Mangalia.

The nearest airport is “Mihail Kogălniceanu” International Airport in Constanța, about 70 kilometers north of Olimp.

The Beach and Natural Setting

The beach in Olimp was relatively narrow before the sand replenishment works. It is now wider and has transverse groynes extending into the sea.

They form artificial bays that protect the shoreline from erosion and create areas of calmer water. The entry into the sea is generally gentle, which makes Olimp beach suitable for families with children.

The resort's distinctive natural feature is the high cliff, a promontory on which most of the hotel complexes are located.

Accommodation Options in Olimp

The accommodation on offer in Olimp is dominated by large hotels built in the 1970s, whose distinctive terraced architecture takes advantage of the high cliff's terrain.

A significant number of these accommodation units have undergone extensive renovation and modernization and are currently rated 3 and 4 stars.

Hook Of Love – Le Mirage de la Mer is a hotel in Olimp, a 4-minute walk from 23 August Beach. It offers private parking and a restaurant, and the rooms are equipped with air conditioning, a balcony, and a refrigerator.

Novum By the Sea is an aparthotel on the beach in Olimp, with a private beach area and an outdoor pool. The apartments include a fully equipped kitchen.

STEAUA DE MARE – Olimp Resort is a hotel a 3-minute walk from the beach. It has free private parking and a restaurant.

Lacul Racilor Tourist Complex is located on Tatlageac Lake, 1 km from Olimp, and offers accommodation in rooms and villas. It has a fish restaurant and a children's playground.

Most hotels operate with service packages that include meals. The most common meal plans are all-inclusive.

Although the offer consists mainly of hotels, the resort also has a limited number of alternative accommodation options, such as Casa de Mare Cottages or serviced apartments for rent (Sea View Apartments).

Thanks to the predominance of hotels offering all-inclusive packages, pools, and easy beach access, Olimp resort is a recommended option for families with children, couples, and adults looking for a vacation focused on comfort and relaxation.

The overall atmosphere is quieter compared to resorts such as Mamaia or Costinești.

On the other hand, Olimp is less suitable for young people looking for an intense nightlife, as the choice of clubs is very limited.

Activities and Leisure

The main activities in Olimp are concentrated around the seafront and include spending time on the beach, swimming, and walking along the upper promenade (at hotel level) and the lower one (at beach level).

An important part of the leisure offer is the facilities of the hotel complexes. Most of the large hotels have their own outdoor pools for both adults and children, a major attraction for their guests.

Thanks to its location, the resort offers easy access to several nearby points of interest:

  • Comorova Forest: Located between Olimp and Neptun, it offers walks in shady areas.

  • “La Steaguri” Beach: A popular stretch of coastline in Neptun resort.

The resort's location also makes it easy to organize day trips to various sights in the region:

  • To the south: The city of Mangalia (where you can visit the Stud Farm, the Tourist Port, and the “Callatis” Archaeology Museum) and Vama Veche resort.

  • To the north: The city of Constanța (with sights such as the Old Town and the Natural Sciences Museum Complex, which includes the Dolphinarium) and the resorts of Mamaia, Mamaia Nord

  • Other sights: The ancient fortresses of Histria and Tropaeum Traiani (Adamclisi), the Dobruja Gorges, organized trips to the Danube Delta, or visits to the Bulgarian coast, for example to Balchik.

Conclusion

Olimp resort is characterized by its distinctive amphitheater-style architecture, which makes the most of its location on a high cliff. The terraced construction gives most accommodation units a direct sea view, as in Eforie Nord and Eforie Sud.

The overall atmosphere is peaceful, as the resort is less crowded than other tourist centers on the coast.

The offer focuses on full-service, all-inclusive packages, with facilities integrated into the hotel complexes (pools, restaurants, private beaches).
