Rânca Resort – The Road to 1,600 m on the Transalpina: Getting to the Mountain Destination

History of Rânca Resort

In 1930, the “Gilortul” People's Bank of Novaci put into practice the plan devised by Novaci native Dumitru Brezulescu to create a mountain resort in Rânca. The initiative began with the construction of 6 chalets, each with 5 rooms. Seven years later, in 1937, the central chalet in Rânca was opened, with the support and contribution of Romania's then Prime Minister, the Liberal Gheorghe Tătărăscu.

By December 1989, more chalets had been added in Rânca, such as one run by the Gorj County Tourism Office, one managed by the University of Craiova, and a chalet belonging to the miners' unions of the Oltenia coal basin. Nearby there was also a military unit where recruits of the mountain troops were trained.

Location of Rânca Resort

Rânca Resort lies in Gorj County, at the highest altitude of any resort in Romania, along the Transalpina, at the foot of Păpușa Peak in the Parâng Mountains, about 18 km from the town of Novaci, 200 km from Sibiu, 290 km from Bucharest, and 150 km from Craiova. This convenient location makes the village of Rânca and its developing resort accessible to visitors from several directions.

Access Routes to Rânca Resort

  • From Petroșani: those coming from the north or northwest of the country can choose this route, which benefits from a well-maintained road that is kept clear of snow. The route passes through Jiet, the Jiet Gorges, Groapa Seacă, and Obârșia Lotrului before reaching the destination.

  • From Râmnicu Vâlcea: another option is to set out from Râmnicu Vâlcea and travel through Călimănești, Brezoi, and Voineasa on National Road 7A. This route is the only way to reach Rânca from the south of the country. Although only partly paved, the road is relatively well maintained, including in winter.

  • From Sebeș, Alba: for those coming from the direction of Sebeș, the route goes through Petrești, Căpâlna, Șugag, and Tău Bistra. This option is best avoided in winter, as the road is poorly cleared of snow or even closed to traffic.

The Transalpina road is most often closed to traffic in winter on the Oașa and Obârșia Lotrului side, so access is from Novaci, which favors visitors from that part of the country.
