Historical Background, Formation, and Characteristics of the Natural Resources
The development of Sovata as a settlement, and later as a resort, is intrinsically linked to the salt mountain beneath the region. The first documentary records of salt mining in the area date back to the 16th century.
The resort has enjoyed European recognition since as early as 1850.
Sovata's decisive transformation into a spa town was marked by the formation of Bear Lake in May 1875, following a land collapse over an old salt mine, above which the waters of the Criș-Toplița and Auriu streams accumulated.
It is the largest heliothermal lake in Europe and the second largest in the world. (See Wikipedia) The lake has a maximum depth of about 18 meters and a surface area of about 4 hectares.
The phenomenon of heliothermy, specific to Bear Lake and other lakes in the area (Aluniș, Roșu, Verde), shows up as a thermal and saline stratification of the water.
Bear Lake

The surface layer, made up of fresh water from precipitation and inflowing streams, has low salinity and acts as a thermal insulator.
The lower layers, with a very high salt concentration (up to 300 g/l at the bottom of Bear Lake), absorb and retain solar energy, allowing temperatures to reach 40-50°C at a depth of 1.5-2 meters during the summer.
Besides Bear Lake, Sovata's salt lake complex also includes the Negru, Mierlei, and Șerpilor salt lakes, each with its own characteristics. The mud extracted from Negru Lake and other areas, together with the hyperconcentrated sodium chloride mineral waters, are the main natural therapeutic factors.
Therapeutic Indications and Treatment Centers. Spa and Wellness Tourism
Sovata is traditionally renowned for its effectiveness in treating gynecological conditions, as the salt water and mud have beneficial effects in cases of secondary infertility and ovarian insufficiency, as well as in chronic inflammations such as cervicitis and metroadnexitis.
An important share of the therapeutic indications concerns rheumatic conditions, whether degenerative (such as spondylosis, coxarthrosis, or gonarthrosis), inflammatory (such as rheumatoid arthritis, during periods of remission), or abarticular (tendinosis, periarthritis).
Recovery from various injuries, such as sprains, dislocations, or fractures, is also aided by the healing properties of the local resources.
In addition, spa treatments here also address other health problems. These include peripheral neurological disorders, certain endocrine dysfunctions, some cardiovascular conditions or skin disorders.
The range of therapeutic procedures offered at Sovata's modern treatment centers, whether integrated into hotels or operating independently, is very diverse.

It mainly includes hot baths in tubs or pools filled with the salt water typical of the lakes, hot sapropelic mud wraps, the mud being known for its anti-inflammatory and regenerative properties, as well as aerosol therapy, hydrotherapy, physical therapy (therapeutic exercise), electrotherapy, and various forms of therapeutic massage.
