The Șureanu Ski Area, located in this picturesque part of Romania, has in recent years been a true paradise for ski and snowboard lovers, offering them unique experiences during the winter season.
The Șureanu ski resort – the road to dream slopes from Sebeș, along the route to the Transalpina
In the heart of the Șureanu Mountains, just a short distance from the town of Sebeș, lies the ski resort of Șureanu. The road to the ski area begins in the picturesque town of Sebeș and continues along the Transalpina route, offering a unique experience to lovers of unspoiled landscapes and winter sports.
History of the Șureanu Ski Area
The Șureanu Ski Area opened in 2009 following a private investment. The years that followed brought major investments in the ski area. The unique high-altitude geographic setting laid the foundation for a remarkable infrastructure for winter sports, where the deep snow cover often exceeds 1.5 meters between December and April.
Over time, Șureanu has strengthened its position as a mountain destination in Romania. The slopes have been modernized, the facilities expanded, and the resort has drawn tourists from all over the country and from abroad.
Șureanu Resort – location
The Șureanu Ski Area lies in the heart of Romania, stretching across Alba and Hunedoara counties. The mountain resort spreads across a spectacular natural mountain landscape, set at considerable altitude in the Șureanu Mountains (also called the Sebeș Mountains), a subdivision of the Parâng Mountains, between Șureanu Peak at 2,059 meters and Pătru Peak at 2,130 meters, and including Aușel Peak at 2,009 meters and Curmătura Peak at 1,809 meters.
Access routes to the Șureanu Ski Area
The main access route, which offers good driving conditions (with snow clearing), starts from Sebeș, Alba County, and takes just over 2 hours, covering about 82 km.
The itinerary is as follows:
Sebeș (DN 67C – 28 km) – Șugag (30 km) – Oașa (13 km) – Luncile Prigoanei (5 km) – Poiana Poarta Raiului – Poarta Raiului ski area base (6 km)
Up to Oașa Lake, the route follows the road to the Transalpina from Sebeș and is well maintained in winter. From Oașa, the route turns right toward Oașa Monastery, but the road is unpaved and covered in snow in winter, making access almost impossible for tourists without proper equipment (snow chains). Higher-clearance vehicles are recommended, preferably 4×4s.

The 11 groomed slopes of the Șureanu ski area range from 1,650 to 2,010 m in altitude. They are generally intended for skiers who are not beginners, because of some short difficult sections and steeper stretches along the runs.
Slope A1: 1,650 m long; a red slope for experienced skiers;
Slope A2: 1,430 m long; the first part is difficult, the steepest section of the Șureanu slopes (black); the next part is a red slope, also for experienced skiers;
Slope A3: 2,060 m long; red, and the longest run in the resort;
Slope C1: 1,100 m long; rated blue, but its steep final section is classed as advanced;
Slope C2: 650 m long; red, short, but wide and well suited to snowboarding;
Slope C3: 650 m long; red; somewhat unpredictable and for advanced skiers;
Slope C4: 830 m long; red, steep, and with varying gradients, favored by advanced skiers and snowboarders in the last part of the run; it intersects with A1;
Slope C0: 300 m long; a very easy slope for children;
Slope S1: 600 m long; a blue slope that ends in an uphill stretch;
Slope S2: 1,150 m long; red difficulty; part of its route coincides with S1, but it then branches off and leads through a forest along a narrow, steep slope;
Slope S3: 1,350 m long; a red slope that partly coincides with S2, intended for good skiers.
The ski area has the following lift facilities: two ski lifts at Șureanu and Curmătura, a chairlift at Aușel, a baby lift, and 3 après-ski venues. A hotel is also under construction in the area.
There are no snow cannons, as its location places it among the resorts with a long natural snow season. There is also no night skiing.
At the base of the ski area there is a fairly spacious parking lot, and a little higher up, at the Con après-ski, there is a second parking lot.
For those interested, there are ski equipment rental points, as well as instructors who teach winter sports.
