Description
What makes Bigăr Waterfall so special is its unusual and picturesque shape, forming a wave of water that spills into the Miniș River.
Bigăr Waterfall

The water tumbling off the rock forms a curtain that weaves through moss and vegetation, creating a particularly beautiful and unreal effect. The curtain of water seems to pour out of a natural spring at the top of the rock, creating a remarkable visual spectacle.
Scientists and geologists who have studied Bigăr Waterfall have concluded that its unique formation is the result of a long and complex process of erosion and sedimentation.
Located in a distinctive geological area with layers of limestone and karst features, the waterfall is fed by water flowing from a spring on the rocky plateau above, known as the Bigăr Karst Spring.
The constant action of the water and of natural forces such as rain and wind has eroded and shaped the rock into a circular form, creating a particularly beautiful and unique natural phenomenon, and the area has been declared a protected area to preserve this rare landscape.
The legend
Bigăr Waterfall is not just a natural beauty but also a place with a rich history and many local legends that add to its charm. The history of this fascinating place is surrounded by stories and traditions passed down from generation to generation.
A local legend says that the waterfall is named after a shepherd from the area called Bigăr who, after a love story that ended tragically, is said to have fallen from the rock while on his way to his beloved. The legend is similar to that of Bâlea Waterfall.
This romantic and dramatic story adds an extra layer of fascination to the waterfall and draws tourists eager to discover and connect with local history and traditions.
Natural and ecological features
The Bigăr Spring not only feeds the famous waterfall with its clear water but is also a rich and fragile ecosystem, home to a variety of plant and animal species. Surrounded by dense forest and lush vegetation, Bigăr Waterfall provides an ideal habitat for many species of mosses, ferns, and other aquatic and terrestrial plants, thanks to its location in the Anina area and the presence of calcareous tufa. This complex ecosystem is essential for maintaining biodiversity and ecological balance in the area.
Protecting and conserving this natural habitat is extremely important to ensure the survival and well-being of the local fauna and flora.
In June 2021, part of Bigăr Waterfall collapsed under its own weight. A similar incident had also occurred in 2007.
