About Pișoaia Waterfall in Vidra
The waterfall, also known as Bride's Waterfall (Cascada Miresii) or Vidra Waterfall, is a masterpiece of nature carved into the limestone of the Apuseni Mountains.
The water plunges from a height of about 20 meters, forming a spectacular curtain over a limestone wall guarded by tall trees. It then falls and spills in small rivulets over lush green vegetation and limestone formations.
The water flow varies with the season, but the waterfall has a special charm in winter too, when its waters freeze into huge icicles.
Besides its natural beauty, the waterfall also stands out for the unique geological formations in the area. The rock wall of the waterfall is made of massive limestone with visible layers that bear witness to the site's geological history.
Behind the waterfall lies a forest of deciduous trees and conifers, tall trees that stand guard over the place.
The flora and fauna around it are rich and diverse. The old-growth green forest surrounding the waterfall is home to a variety of trees, including firs, spruces, beeches, and elms.
Colorful wildflowers grow in the clearings, and various animal species hide in the forest thickets, from squirrels and hares to wild boars and deer.
A sad legend of unfulfilled love
Legend has it that long ago, in the heart of the Apuseni Mountains, there lived a girl of rare beauty, the daughter of a wealthy boyar. Her heart was caught in the snares of love for a poor but hardworking shepherd. Their love was pure and sincere, but the girl's parents fiercely opposed the relationship. Unwilling to give up their love, the girl decided to run away with the shepherd on the night before the wedding her parents had arranged.
Under the moonlight, they set off toward a high cliff, where they swore eternal love. But at the first light of dawn, they were caught by the boyar's servants. Seeing no way out, the girl chose a tragic death: she threw herself off the cliff, and her tears turned into the cascades of crystal-clear water that still flow today.
Since then, it is said that the girl's soul haunts the waterfall, weeping for her lost love. Legend has it that if an unmarried girl comes to the waterfall alone at midnight and whispers her wish, she will hear the name of the man she is destined to marry.
The boulders at the base of the waterfall are also shrouded in mystery. These giant boulders are said to embody the girls who came to the waterfall in search of love but heard no whisper in the night. They are still waiting today, turned to stone by grief and longing, for the name to be spoken.
