Valea Cetății Cave (or Fundata Cave) is a protected natural area in the Postăvaru Massif, about 3 km from Râșnov, Brașov County.

The site is set up for visitors and is a point of geological and tourist interest in the area.

In this article:

Location and Access

Valea Cetății Cave lies on the northern slope of Dealul Cetății (Fortress Hill), near Râșnov Fortress.

Access is via the road that climbs to the fortress and is relatively easy (at Scărișoara Ice Cave, for example, access is more difficult), with remarkable flora and scenery along the way.

The cave is properly signposted, and there are parking spaces available at the foot of the hill.

Geology and the cave interior

The cave was discovered more than 75 years ago, in 1949, after a hydraulic blast that affected the Fundata Valley. It formed in Jurassic limestone as water gradually dissolved the rock.

The total explored length is 958 meters, and the route open to the public is about 400 meters long.

Its geological age is estimated at more than 3.5 million years.

Inside the cave, the temperature stays constant all year round, between 8°C and 10°C (as in Bears' Cave).

Since 2011, the cave has been fully developed and open to tourists. Visitors benefit from a professional lighting system and modern infrastructure, with walkways, stairs and railings.

The Great Hall (Sala Mare) is the main attraction, over 20 meters high and covering about 2,500 square meters. The network of side galleries branches off from here.

The accessible section lets you admire calcite flowstones and notable formations (stalactites, stalagmites and columns), including a stalagmite 2 meters tall.

Besides being a geological attraction, the cave is also used for cultural events. The cave's main gallery has excellent acoustics, and the space is occasionally used for concerts and performances.
