You'll find them in the Arieș Valley, in the Trascău Mountains, just 2 km from Sălciua commune, in Alba County. The last part of the series of waterfalls, the lower cascade, can be admired from national road DN75, where it flows into the Arieș, close to the route of the famous Mocănița narrow-gauge train.

How to get to Șipote Waterfall

Right next to the spot where the waterfall meets the Arieș, on the riverbank along the DN75, there is a rustic, creatively designed parking area (a bear carved in wood, a giant wooden heart) that invites you to stop and admire the beauty of the final part of this fairy-tale waterfall.

To get to Șipote Waterfall, right where its journey begins:

  1. From the center of Sălciua commune, follow the road toward Huda lui Papară for 2 km until you reach Valea Morilor. From here, follow a trail marked with a red cross, and you'll reach the La Șipote meadow after about an hour's walk.

  2. You can also choose another route starting from Huda lui Papară, following the trail marked with a red triangle, which will take you below the Bedeleu escarpment in about 2 hours of walking.

Description

The waterfall is surrounded by dense forests and imposing cliffs. It can be the perfect setting for a romantic getaway or a day of exploring with the family.

Șipote Waterfall is a complex karst phenomenon that includes the following elements:

  • A water catchment basin, part of the Bedeleu Plateau, which is known for its depressions and periodic openings in the ground, at an altitude of 1,100-1,200 m.

  • 3 karst springs (springs with intermittent flow) located about 400 m below the rock wall, with a moderate flow, through which the water collected on the plateau comes to the surface after passing through thick layers of limestone.

  • An 800 m long stream that descends from 700 meters to 430 m in altitude, flowing down a steep bed and emptying into the Arieș River.

  • A significant number of cascades up to 15 m high, scattered over rocky surfaces or built up in the form of travertine dams.

  • Gours (a karst formation found on cave floors, consisting of an area enclosed by deposits of calcite and other minerals, usually filled with water) made of travertine, basins formed like dams from limestone deposits. See more details on wikipedia.ro
